- Consequently projects associated with enlarging the floor area or changing the height by adding a bedroom, or attaching a garage, or deck to an existing residence are examples of additions that are governed by the zoning ordinance requiring a zoning permit application, the building codes requiring a building permit application and the stormwater management ordinance requiring a SWM plan unless exempted.

Alterations that require a Building Permit
are by definition any structural changes or modifications in the supporting members of a building, such as bearing walls, columns, beams or girders, within the building envelope and are governed by the building codes.

Accessory Structures
The terms accessory structure and accessory building are used interchangeably. An accessory building by definition is a building detached from and subordinate to the main building and used for purposes customarily incidental to the main building. Accessory buildings are commonly used as carports, garages, greenhouses and sheds whereas accessory structures include but are not limited to decks and pools.
The structures all house uses that are incidental to the primary use which is the dwelling unit and the activities that take place in accessory structures occur as a result of the primary building. Their use is secondary or minor in importance to the primary residence.
